BEING A GOOD MINISTER

BY STEVE NIEMEIER

Paul instructed Timothy in I Timothy 4:6 to be a good minister by instructing the brethren of what the Spirit had said would occur in the last days.  Things like some departing from the faith, giving heed to deceiving spirits and doctrines of demons, etc.  Paul wanted Timothy to be aware that as a minister he would be facing these issues.  Paul told Timothy in II Timothy 4:1-5 to preach the word and be ready in season and out of season.  Paul was concerned that Timothy not fall to the “soft preaching syndrome” or “beating around the bush tactics” that some in the last days would fall victim to.

We have no record of Timothy not heeding the words from Paul.  However, we certainly do have records today of many who call themselves ministers not heeding these words from Paul.  It is not unusual for congregations to want their preacher “not to hurt anyone's feelings” as he preaches.  It has been my observation that one would have a very difficult time preaching the gospel of Jesus Christ in its entirety and not hurt one's feelings.  The gospel of Christ pierces hearts just like it did on the Day of Pentecost and some obey.  It also pierces hearts like it did to some of those listening to Stephen and we know the results of that heart piercing sermon.

Jesus Himself said He came to set a man against his father, etc. in Matthew 10:34-39.  A good minister preaches the whole gospel of Jesus Christ.  A good minister should preach from the heart and not let his attitude be of such that he says things in a way that would be inappropriate to present the gospel of Christ properly.  The gospel of Christ contains good news for those who are willing to follow it, sad news for those who decide to neglect it.  Teaching someone the results of not obeying His gospel can hurt someone's feelings---but it still needs to be said!  We need good ministers to say it!
