A NEWSLETTER FOR THE MEMBERS OF THE GREENWOOD CHURCH OF CHRIST
“MEMORIAL DAY”BY STEVE NIEMEIERToday is the first major holiday of the “summer season” (even though summer is officially about a month away) and many folks will be traveling over this holiday weekend. This Memorial Day has been established to remember those who perished protecting our freedom and to allow us to continue to live in freedom. Also, it is a day that we remember any who have passed on before us. Cemeteries across the nation will display fresh flowers upon tombstones. Loved ones have taken time to make sure those “tombstones” are “decorated.” It is good that we have a day such as this set aside to remember. Jesus Christ also set aside time for us to remember Him until He comes again (Luke 22:14-20). He did so much for us and He knew that we are forgetful and this memorial supper would help us to stay focused on what He did do. We have the example in Acts 20:7 of the disciples doing this on the first day of the week. The weekly memorial that we have instituted is most fitting for the One who was the sacrifice for us as He carried our sins with Him to the cross. We have the hope of eternal salvation (eternal freedom from sin, death, tears, sorrow, etc.) because of His sacrifice. How wonderful it is to be able to find His wonderful light in a world full of sorrow. While we paused this weekend to remember loved ones who have passed away, let us not forget about the One who died so that we could live. Oh what a Savior He is and He never takes a holiday from being our Savior and we should never take a holiday from serving Him. |
