“PLANTING A SEED”BY STEVE NIEMEIERLuke quotes Jesus talking about faith as a mustard seed in Luke 17:6. His discussion about this faith was in response to the apostles asking Him to increase their faith in verse one. In His answer to them He gives several great examples and His closing statement is one that penetrates every one who proclaims to be His servant. Jesus explains in verse 10 that when we have done all that we are commanded to do we need to say to ourselves that we are unprofitable servants for we have done just what our duty was to do. Our duty is to obey His commandments if we want Him as our friend (John 15:14). If we keep His commandments we will abide in His love (John 15:10). One of His commandments is that we would tell all about what He has done for us. He came down from Heaven and lived a life just as we have to live. He overcame the temptations that we have to overcome (Hebrews 2:18; 4:15). He suffered heartaches and physical ailments just as we suffer (John 11:35; Matthew 27:27-50). There is a story to tell of this One who came from Heaven, died for us, carrying our sins to the cross with Him, a story of burial and resurrection and then ascending back to Heaven. A story of how He is coming again and how He will take those who have faith as a mustard seed to the eternal home with God the Creator and Father. This is a story that needs to be told and it all starts by His servants planting a seed about Him in the hearts of every man---it is our duty! |
