ONE DAY AT A TIME

STEVE NIEMEIER

Here it is another day in my life and as I sit in the office wondering just how many days I lived in my life it comes to me that each day was lived one day at a time but may have been part of a routine that I followed or thought about many days before.

This article is being written on Monday.  For some it was tough getting up and going to work this morning.  This is also a tough day for many of us that are Christians because we have just been with our fellow brothers and sisters in Christ on the first day of the week and we are “charged”.  We are full of thoughts about what we studied in class or what the sermons were about.  We may have concern over the burdens of a fellow brother or sister.  No doubt we are thinking about those that are physically sick and special thoughts are occurring about those who are struggling spiritually.  Monday's are also difficult because it seems so long before we get to be with our brothers and sisters again and we are somewhat alone against Satan and his angels during this time.

Tuesday morning brings some encouragement.  We are into the work week and our routine is back to where it was last week.  As a Christian we should be thinking about getting our lesson for the Wednesday night Bible Study.  However, we are back in the groove and our thoughts are less about our brothers and sisters and their struggles of life as we have our own to deal with.  In fact we will just put off getting our Bible lesson for Wednesday evening because if things continue as they are we may not be going to Wednesdays Bible Study.

Wednesday comes and if we can make it through this day then we will be over the “hump” and the weekend is just around the corner.  The days schedule is full!  No time to worry about tonight's Bible lesson and still not sure if I will be up to going to Bible Study because I am pretty tired and the week has been so hectic.  If I do go to services tonight I will just “wing” it.  Wednesday night comes and Bible Study didn't make it on the “to do” list.  I just didn't quite feel up to it.

Thursday morning comes and off to work I go.  Only two more days to work and then I will have the weekend.  I think I might go to a movie tonight.  I know that it will be late when I get home but that's okay I only have one more day of work this week.  Isn't it amazing the difference a day makes as I was just too tired to go to services last night but tonight I feel great.

Friday comes and what a great day it is!  It is pay day and we will be going out tonight as we have plans almost every Friday and we never miss those plans no matter how tired we are.

Saturday comes and the day is full of activities.  Some of those activities may be working around the house, hunting or playing golf, running the kids here and there, shopping and oh yes Saturday night which for many is the best night of the week for “partying”.  Saturday's seem to go by so quick.

Sunday morning comes and you know we're pretty tired.  We did a lot yesterday!  Maybe we'll just sleep in a little longer and attend worship service this morning.  We will think about attending services tonight after we see how we feel after our busy Sunday afternoon.  After all, we have to work tomorrow.  The first thing we know it is Monday again and the process starts all over again.

Yes, we live our lives one day at a time but we seem to have each day planned out and unfortunately the words of Jesus in Matthew 6:33 “But seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness...” only fit in our plans when we want them to.  Jesus tells us in Matthew 6:34 “Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about its own things.  Sufficient for the day is its own trouble.”  Many of us would not know what to do if we didn't worry about tomorrow would we?  We may live our lives one day at a time but we sure think about the next day before it comes don't we?
