A NEWSLETTER FOR THE MEMBERS OF THE GREENWOOD CHURCH OF CHRIST
BEWARE OF THE SEASON!STEVE NIEMEIERMany are upset about “Christ being taken out of Christmas” because of the worlds celebration of Christ's birthday on Dec. 25th. Many have stated that even though they believe this is not really His birthday that we need to celebrate it sometime. As a result of this thinking one can actually violate the law of Christ who is the One they think they are honoring by this celebration. While we do have the record of Christ's birth recorded in the New Testament there is no account of the specific day. Neither is there any account instructing us to celebrate His birth. Yet, many are determined this is the right thing to do. Revelation 22:18-19 warns us of the consequences if we add to or take away from the word of God. To celebrate His Sons birth without God's authority to do so is adding to His word. It is somewhat amazing of how many folks insist on celebrating His birth on Dec. 25th yet refuse to remember His death according to the guidelines given in the Scriptures. Jesus Himself said that we are to remember Him by partaking of the memorial supper He instituted (Luke 22:19-20). We have an example in Acts 20:7 that the disciples met upon the first day of the week to remember Him as He commanded. This is not adding to or taking away from His word but abiding by His word. Please beware that you do not fall victim to thinking you are doing a good thing by trying to put Christ where He has not been. Also, please beware that you do honor Christ in the way that He commanded, by partaking of the Lord's supper every first day of the week. |
